How to read best-of-five handicaps and totals

A best-of-five needs three map wins, so the handicap and total lines move. What -1.5, -2.5, over 3.5 and over 4.5 actually ask of the series.

A best-of-five is won by the first team to take three maps, and that single fact re-anchors every market on the board. The match-winner price covers the whole series, the familiar -1.5 map handicap now allows a 3-1 win, and the total maps line can sit at 3.5 or 4.5 instead of the best-of-three 2.5. Here is how to read each one.

The series score is the unit

The match-winner market settles on the series, not on any single map. A team can drop the first two maps, win three straight, and settle as the winner at the price you took before the series started. A price on a named map is a different market with its own scope, exactly as the market guide frames it: always ask what the market needs to happen, not just who wins.

This is why the same teams show different prices at the same moment. One number describes the series; another describes one map inside it.

Handicaps in a five-map series

A map handicap adds or subtracts maps from the final series score. With five maps possible, the lines stretch: -1.5 asks for a win by two maps or more, and -2.5 asks for a clean sweep. A completed series with no awarded advantage settles like this:

Final scoreA wins matchA -1.5 mapsA -2.5 mapsMaps played
3-0WinWinWin3
3-1WinWinLose4
3-2WinLoseLose5
2-3LoseLoseLose5
1-3LoseLoseLose4
0-3LoseLoseLose3

Note the middle row. A 3-2 winner pays the match-winner ticket and loses both handicaps, because neither margin was reached. Half-map lines exist precisely so the adjustment cannot tie.

Totals move to 3.5 and 4.5

Total maps counts how many maps are played, whoever wins them. In a best-of-five, over 3.5 needs at least four maps, so a 3-1 already cashes it. Over 4.5 needs the deciding fifth map, the long-series equivalent of over 2.5 in a best-of-three. Under 3.5 requires a 3-0 sweep and nothing else.

Do not carry a number across formats. The 2.5 you remember from a best-of-three means something different here, and the market label, not memory, defines the line.

Where you will meet the format

Best-of-five series appear mainly in later playoff rounds and finals, and the format varies by tournament and by game. League of Legends playoff series are frequently best-of-five, while Counter-Strike 2 finals move between formats depending on the event. Confirm the format before comparing two prices: the LoL odds page and the CS2 odds page both start their reading checklists with the series format for the same reason.

One last caution from the market guide applies here too: awarded maps, void games or unusual formats can change settlement, so these examples assume a normal completed series. This desk shows full-match winner prices only, and a market label always outranks a habit.
